With a chance to visit our friends Keith & Jo in Pego & combine an overnight stay in nearby Valencia, we jumped at the opportunity.
The drive took just over 3hrs to a town called Gandia. We left the car here & took the 1hr scenic train journey along the coast, through orange groves, to Valencia.
Valencia Norte station is an amazing Moderniste-style structure dating from 1917. The outside & ticketing hall depict scenes from local life of that era, with ceramic mosaics & vegetable, flower, orange tree and orange blossom motifs decorating every square meter.
Just wandering around the city on foot you can see the most amazing buildings, such as the post office in the main plaza.
There is a vibrant nightlife, with theatres, cinemas, bars & hundreds of restaurants offering varied cuisine & of course local specialities.
A must to see, is the Science Park, with a host of futuristic buildings & the largest aquarium in Europe.
Unfortunately an afternoon & evening did not give us the chance to do full justice to such a city; but we can always visit again! Want to know more about the bits we missed? See: Telegraph
