In addition to the Mayan ruins, wildlife & magnificent caves; the highlights of Belize center on the Barrier Reef (which is the second largest in the World). With crystal clear Caribbean sea, the reef & the huge sink hole (Blue Hole), the Islands support the numerous tourists that come to dive, snorkel & experience the cystal Caribbean sea.
The most popular of the islands appear to be Ambergris Caye (San Pedro – yes, Madonna’s La Isla Bonita ) & Caye Caulker.
We opted for Caye Caulker accesible by a 50 min speed boat ride from Belize City. To get from Hopkins to Belize City, we took 3 buses, via Dangriga & Belmapan (a seemless 3hr journey with no waits between buses).
Caye Caulker has a laid back Caribbean culture, with plenty of bars & restaurants to create a holiday feel. The locals live side by side with the numerous guest houses & hotels.
The island does not have many beaches, so no wandering along white powdery sand, but access to the Caribbean sea is easy from the many jetties & makes up for lack of beaches.
Watching the sunset from the West side of ‘the split’.
The Queen’s head is on the bank notes of Belize, as well as my mug of morning coffee
The sea is full of fish including lobster & this large shrimp speared from the jetty.
That’s got to be the biggest shrimp I’ve ever seen! You guys have seen some amazing sunsets, you could probably do a best of or top ten!
Now there an idea for a blog! 🙂
