Being approx 1hr from Tikal, Flores was an obvious spot to stay. The Island is situated at the end of a causeway from Santa Elena, making it the only island so far, we didn’t have to travel to, by boat.
It is full of small colonial style buildings with red roofs, on cobbled streets. In fact it looks more like a European town, or even the fishing villages of Cornwall or Devon.
Popular with tourists there are a few bars, restaurants & cafes in the town. The nightly street food is also amazing on the jetty, where you can eat & watch the sunset.
The area is also served by Mundo Maya Intl Airport, with direct flights from Guatemala City. We travelled by shuttle from Antigua-Coban (supposedly 6hrs, took 11hrs due to landslide & traffic) then next day, Coban-Flores (supposedly 7hrs, took 9hrs).
